History. The first European people to come to South Africa were Portuguese explorers. In 1487, Bartolomeu Dias found what he called the "Cape of Storms". The king of Portugal changed it to " Cape of Good Hope ". He called it this because the cape gave the Portuguese a new chance to find a sea route to India.
