The DVD, Blu-ray Disc, and UMD media formats all support the use of region coding; DVDs use eight region codes (Region 7 is reserved for future use; Region 8 is used for "international venues", such as airplanes and cruise ships), and Blu-ray Discs use three region codes corresponding to different areas of the world.

Regional Playback Control. RPC-1 and RPC-2 are designations applied to firmware for DVD drives. Older DVD drives use RPC-1 firmware, which allows DVDs from any region to play. 1) DVD's unfortunately are region coded, the US is in region 1 while the UK is in region 2. The simplest solution is simply to buy a new DVD player that is region free, they are now very easy to buy and quite cheap in Europe.
