May 2023. On behalf of the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), I am pleased to present the 2023 edition of the Condition of Education. The Condition is an annual report mandated by the U.S. Congress that summarizes the latest data on education in the United States, including international comparisons.
The Report on the Condition of Education 2021 encompasses key findings from the Condition of Education Indicator System. The Indicator System for 2021 presents 86 indicators, including 22 indicators on crime and safety topics, and can be accessed online through the website or by downloading PDFs for the individual indicators.

This represents 2.2% of all students enrolled in public schools (NCES, 2021). The total number of students who experienced homelessness in SY 2020-21 represents a 14% decrease from SY 2019-20 and a 21% decrease from SY 2018-19. Between SYs 2004-05 and 2020-21, the number of students who experienced homelessness increased by 63%.
The percentage of homeless students living in a particular type of housing remained relatively stable between SYs 2019-20 and 2021-22. In SY 2021-22, 76% of students who experienced homelessness lived in doubled-up situations, 11% lived in shelters/transitional housing, 9% stayed in hotels/motels, and 4% lived in unsheltered locations.
