The Trans-Mississippi Issue is a set of nine commemorative postage stamps issued by the United States to mark the 1898 Trans-Mississippi Exposition held in Omaha, Nebraska.The finely engraved stamps depict various scenes of the West and are presently valued much by collectors.
Stamp issues. The American Credo stamps were printed by the U.S.Bureau of Engraving and Printing in sheets of fifty. Each of the American Credo stamps paid the postage for a one-ounce letter mailed within the United States.The symbols depicted by the stamp issues relate to the credo inscribed in the stamp designs.
The primary, interest-earning stamp issued was the War Savings Certificate stamp, which was worth 5 dollars at maturity on January 1, 1923. These stamps needed to be affixed to an engraved folder called the War Savings Certificate, which carried the name of the purchaser, and could only be redeemed by that individual.

The most significant collectible variety of the set also occurs on this value. The normal color of this stamp is a shade known as ultramarine. A very small number of 4-cent stamps were printed erroneously using the wrong color ink, a significantly darker shade that more closely resembles the blue of the 1-cent stamp.
The Army and Navy issues were released consecutively in numerical order, beginning with the 1 cent issues. The first day of issue for the army issues took place at West Point and Washington DC, while the navy issues were first released at Annapolis, Maryland and Washington DC.
