BBC1's New Year's Eve special Live into 85, broadcast from Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland, ends broadcasting in England, Wales and Northern Ireland as scheduled 40 minutes earlier than in Scotland after a series of disasters brought on by poor organisation from the production team. 20–21 July – Live transmission from the Moon with the landing of Apollo 11; at 03:56 BST on 21 July, Neil Armstrong steps onto the surface. [5] BBC television makes its first overnight broadcast to provide coverage. Footage of the event is reported to have been seen by 22 million UK viewers on 21 July (720 million worldwide).
7–22 February – The BBC provides coverage of the 1998 Winter Olympic Games from Japan. Due to the time difference, live coverage is limited with little action shown, especially during the second week of the Games. 8 February – Debut on ITV of My Kind of Music, hosted by Michael Barrymore.
Christmas Day highlights on BBC1 includes the network television premiere of the 1973 crime caper movie The Sting, starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. ITV shows the Richard Lester-directed 1973 film version of The Three Musketeers, starring Michael York, Oliver Reed, Raquel Welch, Faye Dunaway, Charlton Heston and Christopher Lee.
The ITV soap is a big omission from the viewing figures, but other old favourites got big audiences.
1 March – The monopoly on listings magazines ends with the deregulation of TV listings. Before today, Radio Times published only BBC listings and TVTimes ITV only (and from 1982, Channel 4, including S4C in a pull-out supplement Sbec). However, from this day, they can carry listings for all channels.
