MetroPCS was a 'stand-alone' carrier ; T-Mobile purchased them about a year ago. The 'old' MetroPCS was a CDMA-based carrier and ran on its' "own" towers with some roaming on Verizon and USCC. Some older MetroPCS accounts are grandfathered, for now. The 'new' MetroPCS is part of T-Mobile and is a GSM/UMTS/LTE based carrier with some "850-roaming."
