The founder of R A Lister and Company was Robert Ashton Lister, who was born in 1845. [1] He led the exhibit of the family's products to the Paris Exhibition of 1867, [2] but on return fell out with his father, [citation needed] and in the same year founded R.A.Lister and Company [3] in the former Howard's Lower Mill, Water Street in Dursley to manufacture agricultural machinery.

The Lister D is a 1.5 - 2.5hp stationary engine on petrol or petrol/paraffin (fuel) built between 1926-1965 by R A Lister and Company of Dursley. It is popular with newcomers to the stationary engine hobby with un-restored examples available for as little as £100, plenty of spares and various re-manufactured parts and decals.
A stationary engine is an engine whose framework does not move. They are used to drive immobile equipment, such as pumps, generators, mills or factory machinery, or cable cars. The term usually refers to large immobile reciprocating engines, principally stationary steam engines and, to some extent, stationary internal combustion engines.
A limited liability company, Blackstone & Co Limited, was incorporated on 29 January 1889 to take ownership of the business. [ 2] In 1895/1896 the Carter Brothers (Frank and Evershed) of Billingshurst joined the company. They had developed their 'Reliance' oil engine in 1894, and Blackstone started producing the engine in 1896.
Petters Limited. Petters Limited (known as JB Petter & Sons of Yeovil until 1910), were a maker of stationary petrol and diesel engines from 1896 onwards. [ 1] In 1915 Petter founded Westland Aircraft Works (renamed "Westland Aircraft" in 1935). In 1986 Petters Limited merged with one-time rival R A Lister and Company to form Lister Petter .
Ruston-Bucyrus. Ruston & Hornsby was an industrial equipment manufacturer in Lincoln, England founded in 1918. The company is best known as a manufacturer of narrow and standard gauge diesel locomotives and also of steam shovels. Other products included cars, steam locomotives and a range of internal combustion engines, and later gas turbines.
