The SAT is a college admissions test taken by students in high school. The average SAT score of 2023 high school seniors taking the SAT was 1028 out of 1600. 1 Possible scores on each SAT section range from 200 to 800, for a total possible score of 400 to 1600. NOTE: The SAT was completely redesigned in 2016.
1 Members of the graduating class of 2017, 2018, or 2019 who had taken the SAT as a percentage of all 2016-17, 2017-18, or 2018-19 high school graduates. State percentages were calculated by the College Entrance Examination Board based on the number of high school graduates in each state as projected by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE).
Thirteen of the questions on the math portion of the SAT (about 22% of all the math questions) are not multiple choice. They instead require the test taker to bubble in a number in a four-column grid. All questions on each section of the SAT are weighted equally. For each correct answer, one raw point is added.
NOTE: The SAT was completely redesigned in 2016. The new SAT was first administered in March of 2016.
