These words generally require little or no instruction, e.g., table, swim, cars, and dog (Wosley, 2009). Sight words, function words, and words that name objects are included within Tier 1 vocabulary.

In 2002, Isabel Beck and her colleagues came up with the useful concept of word tiers. They explained that Tier 1 words are part of one's everyday oral language, e.g., happy, baby and drive.
